The God Machine - Scenes from the second storey (1992)

The God Machine are a beautiful but deadly siren in the sea of rock music. I don't think there's ever been a band even remotely similar to them. Scenes from the second storey, their debut album, received high critical acclaim at the time of its release, but I doubt that the band ever experienced anything like commercial success. This is possibly the most perfect heavy rock album (if 'most perfect' makes sense at all) I've ever heard, and definitely the most depressing. It can cause darkness to descend on me for days. I just wanted to warn you about that.

The music is sometimes tagged as 'alternative metal', but I think that tends to cause a warped perception. Overally it's pretty loud and heavy (influences from heavy metal and 70s psychedelic hard rock can be heard), but this is balanced out by some slower tracks and quieter, more introspective periods. Arrangements are made intelligently and keep you interested throughout this long (77') and intense album. Robin Proper-Sheperd's lyrics are often ambiguous and complex, but rarely happy. If you choose to listen to Scenes from the second storey, I really wonder how you take it, what you think of it...

first off, I've been following your blog for some time. Great mp3's keep up the good work.

I've heard of the God Machine before, but never listened to them. I listened to this and at first, I thought it was lame. However it has grown on me. I don't think it's quite dark. Maybe just semi-dark. If you want something dark and disturbing, I recommend Godflesh. This band sounded more like a band who wasn't accepted on the 4AD label because they were too heavy, and that's it. I definately think it has a 4AD feel, but it was put out on fiction. Robert Smith must've had a hand in this, but he has a unique taste in music though. He also loves Cranes, Mogwai, and Deftones (seriously). Keep up the good work, I always look forward to see what you'll put up next.

Hmm, Godflesh was mentioned a few times with reference to GOD. Apparently there's a link between those two bands. Never heard anything by them though... Neither have I heard Mogwai or Deftones. I've seen Mogwai t-shirts and a big section in the local record shop - what kind of music is it? I'm always vewy vewy wawy of mainstream/commercial stuff... Thx for the remark, by the way.

This is a classic album!
There is brilliance in their
repeating wall of sound.
A wonderful Album.

GOD features Justin Broaderick -- the mastermind behind Godflesh -- on guitars. See the link for a website detailing Justin's extensive musical career; like Bill Laswell, he's got his hands in all kinds of genres. You might like his latest project, Jesu.

Godflesh is hardly what I would call "mainstream," -- well, about as "mainstream" as Skinny Puppy, another favorite of mine who I see are also featured here. Godflesh's album Streetcleaner was a monumental work in industrial-metal.
