Rotting Christ - Non Serviam (1994)

Rotting Christ is a Greek death/black metal band that was formed in Athens in 1987. This release shows nicely why I use the slash in the previous sentence, as the guitars and drumwork are typical for death metal, using a highly distorted melodic thrash sound with ample bass, whereas the vocals use the more black related high-pitched, more expressionist sound. And then there's the discerning touch to Rotting Christ, something you can clearly hear in an album I posted earlier (Diabolos Rising): their very economic yet effective use of an ethereal synthesizer. Their music as a whole is fairly simple, I guess, but it stays interesting nevertheless, probably because they're good at keeping a steady rock rhythm combined with a great atmosphere. I really like this release, it's heavy without being too dark.

I bet you they don't take the name all that seriously themselves. Especially since the lead man has several ongoing projects with the lead dude from Impaled Nazarene (another hilarious name, in fact). The latter are notorious for their sick yet superb sense of humour. I think they just indulge in gratuitously gore-infested imagary. Most of these guys are quite okay people, they just like really heavy music and probably do hate Christians. But so do i; I hate anything that reeks of monotheism. So I guess you're right, death metal is happy go-go fun metal! :-)

And musically speaking, I'm not sure you'd like it. I'm still wondering whether you liked Atheist or not. Rotting Christ is not progressive music, it's straightforward death metal but it works and they've got a good sense of atmosphere. Comparable to Deicide, but not as hectic.

Oi. Stumbled across your blog while looking for interviews with Rotting Christ talking specifically about the "Non Serviam" album, in preparation for writing my own review of it. I'm glad you like this one as it is one of my favourites. I don't know how familiar you are with Greek black metal in general, but I think this album is one of the pinnacles of this particular sound, which I feel is pretty unique. Perhaps unlike you I don't really feel the drums or guitars link this to death metal but I can certainly concede the black/death tag. Your friend might like them more than Deicide though because I think they (and the other Greek black metal bands that were a part of this scene) are much, much more melodic than Deicide has ever been. I don't think there is much beauty or doom in Deicide's music, as good as it can sometimes be. Anyway, yes, just saying hello.

Would it be possible to re-upload this album? The better the quality, the more grateful! :-)

I used to like it a lot when I was 14-15 years old, before going completely into the Norwegian Black Metal.

I think Rotting Christ found their own little corner, making music which didn't sound like Burzum, Emperor, Darkthrone, etc. Way too many bands were already trying to do that...

I completely agree with you. They managed to create a really cool & different sound. I'll upload it, but I'm afraid you'll have to wait till after October 19th, as I've already reached my narrow upload limit. Sorry about that, it's a real bitch. If you like Rotting Christ, definitely check out Diabolos Rising and you might also like Necrophagia, which I found here: http://download-full-metal-albums.blogspot.com/

Sorry for the delay, dude/dudette...

No worries, and it's dude! :-) When you have time and possibility you can upload it...

At the moment, I'm getting Lustmord's "Heresy". I got curious about it, and these days getting me curious about something is let's say rare!

I remember once you posted some Blackend BM Compilation Vol. 1. Is there a Vol. 2 or 3? And if it is and you have it, would you be so kind as to share it? I want to make an mp3 cd with mostly Black Metal, but I can't be arsed to do it myself although mostly likely I have already the material...
